Disaster exercise training at fairgrounds

IU Health first responders sort simulated victims as the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) conducts a disaster training drill at the Monroe County Fairgrounds, Tuesday, September 10, 2019 in Bloomington, Ind. The simulated disaster was an explosion with an assessment of chemical contamination. In the event of a real crisis, first responders would have to assess the chemicals, and possibly use HazMat trained first responders to help decontaminate victims before they are transported to the hospital. They would also conduct rescue and triage activities on the scene. Local first responders collaborate at the scene. LEPCs must conduct a training once per year, and assess the effectiveness of the training, to maintain the grant funds needed for the resources to deal with a real incident involving hazardous materials. Members of the Ellettsville Fire Department, Van Buren Township Fire Dept., Bloomington Fire Dept., Northern Monroe Fire Territory, Monroe Fire District, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, City of Bloomington Utilities, Indiana State Homeland Security, IU Health Bloomington first responders, Monroe County Dispatch, Bloomington Police Department, and others, participated in the drill.
