The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has released the make and model of the handgun that discharged Sunday night hitting a 36-year-old man, Tyler Shaw, and his 4 year old son in the head.
The gun that discharged is a Glock 19 handgun, according to the MCSO. The pistol is chambered in 9mm Luger, according to Glock’s website.
“Glock pistols lack a traditional on-off safety lever, which Glock markets as an advantage, especially to police departments, as the user is able to fire immediately without separately manipulating a safety. Instead, the pistols are designed with three independent safety mechanisms to prevent accidental discharge. The system, designated “Safe Action” by Glock, consists of an external integrated trigger safety and two automatic internal safeties: a firing pin safety and a drop safety,” according to Wikipedia.
