A 37-year-old transient woman jumped off the I-69-37 overpass at Third Street Monday evening during an apparent suicide attempt, according to the Bloomington Police Department.
The BPD responded after a caller reported a woman on the side of the steel railing facing the interstate below just after 7 p.m., Monday. The woman’s shoes, and back pack were left on the overpass, as the woman was sitting on the wall of the overpass with her legs hanging over the side, while facing the north bound lanes of the interstate, according to the police.
Officers quickly shut down the interstate for several minutes, according to the police. The woman jumped and landed in the northbound lane of I-69 breaking a leg, hip, and shoulder, but was conscious and alert, and speaking when taken to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital, according to the police. The police said the woman wasn’t struck by any vehicles. An officer at the hospital filed paper work for the woman to be held in detention after the apparent suicide attempt, according to the BPD.
The interstate was reopened a few minutes later when officers were able to get to the woman.
