Police officers assaulted downtown Friday afternoon

Two police officers were assaulted when they responded to a disturbance in the area of 125 N. Walnut Friday afternoon, according to witnesses who spoke to The Bloomingtonian.

Witnesses told the Bloomingtonian they saw a man harassing diners at one of the restaurants on Kirkwood, and said after police arrived, the man punched a female officer, then punched a male officer at least five times.

More police officers arrived, according to witnesses, and the man was subdued as multiple bystanders recorded video of the incident.

According to scanner traffic, two police officers were injured and were given medical attention. The man who assaulted officers was also taken to IU Bloomington Health. The Bloomingtonian heard scanner traffic that indicated officers were escorting the ambulance with the man who struck the officers.

The Bloomingtonian has reached out to the Bloomington Police Department. This story will be updated.
