Two die in early morning Owen County fire

Two occupants of a home in the 4800 block of Autumn Hills Drive in Spencer died in an overnight blaze, according to scanner traffic, and the Owen County Sheriff’s Department.

When a member of law enforcement arrived at the burning home at approximately 2:30 a.m. the fire had nearly consumed the structure. A person outside the structure told a member of law enforcement they believed an elderly couple was still inside, according to radio traffic.

The Owen County Coroner was called to the scene along with the State Fire Marshal Office. The Owen County Coroner did not immediately respond to a media request from The Bloomingtonian.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Department later released the following statement on their Facebook page:

“On the 9th of October 2020 at approximately 2:40am, the Owen County Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a structure fire in the North Central area of the county. When emergency personnel arrived on scene the residence was fully engulfed. After the fire was extinguished, it was learned that two occupants of the home were deceased. A joint investigation is ongoing with the State Fire Marshal Office, Cataract Volunteer Fire Department, Owen County Sheriffs Office and the Owen County Coroners Office. Assisting agencies; Owen Valley Fire Department and Owen County EMS.”
