Members of the Indiana University Police Department hand delivered suspension letters to dozens of members of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity chapter at IU Thursday night.

A group of police stood outside in the dark as members exited the house in small groups to be given the letters, which had also been sent by e-mail.

Members of the fraternity chapter threw a large Halloween party at the fraternity house and police arrived there to shut it down in the early hours of November 1, 2020. When police arrived at the door party goers gathered in the back of house went inside, and police knocked on the door, but nobody answered. Police were told to document everything they saw for a report to be given to the Indiana University Dean of Students.

Indiana is currently in the midst of the 2020 COVID pandemic, and a local ordinance prohibits gatherings of more than 15 people to prevent the spread of the virus that’s killed over 243,000 Americans. Thursday the state posted a record 6,654 new infections. At the beginning of the semester 30 of 40 Greek organizations were on quarantine due to COVID, and the university recommended students find housing outside the Greek houses.

Delta Upsilon was put on the University’s cease and desist list on November 2 and Thursday the Monroe County Health Department issued a statement that the fraternity chapter has been closed down through the summer of 2021.
