Man experiencing mental health crisis taken into custody at Wal Mart

A 33-year-old man holding a knife to his own throat was struck with two bean bags, then tased, by members of law enforcement Sunday afternoon in Bloomington.

Police arrived at the Bloomington Wal Mart Super Center in the 3500 block of W. State Road 45 around 3:29 p.m. after being called to assist the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. A man in the Sporting Goods section was having a mental health issue, according to Bloomington Police Dept. Sgt. Dana Cole.

According to Cole, a family member called the law enforcement to check the welfare of the mentally distraught man. When MCSO deputies arrived, the man turned toward deputies and said he wasn’t going to leave until he “stabbed someone.”

The man was then hit twice in the legs by two bean bags from a “less than lethal launcher,” which is a 12-gauge shotgun modified to fire special bean bags. The man dropped the knife, and then was hit with a taser. When the man fell to the ground, he was placed in handcuffs, according to Cole.

The man was taken to IU Health Bloomington with minor injuries.
