Woman’s death ruled a homicide, according to coroner

The death of a woman who was found after an apartment fire last Thursday in the 500 block of S. Basswood has been ruled a homicide, according to the Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields.

The following statement was sent to members of the media Monday:

“For Immediate Release:
UPDATE:
In reference to the investigation of the death of Teresa Michael that was found deceased in an apartment on Basswood Dr., the preliminary cause of death has been ruled manual strangulation, and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide.  This is an ongoing investigation and no other information will be released at this time.  I do want to address a rumor or report that has been circulating.  The victim’s legs were NOT cutoff.  There was a fire in the apartment that caused burn injuries to the victim however her legs were not severed, this has been falsely reported by individuals not directly involved with the investigation.  Further questions about the investigation should be directed to the Bloomington Police Department.”
