3:52 p.m. Update: Bloomington Police Dept. Capt. Ryan Pedigo has release the following to the media:
“On May 5th at approximately 10:49 a.m., officers and IU Health Ambulance Service personnel responded to Wheeler Mission, located at 215 S Westplex Avenue, regarding a welfare check on an unconscious man that had been located inside a vehicle in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers located the man inside a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo and determined that he was deceased. The complainant reported to officers that he regularly checked on the man and on today’s date, located him unconscious inside the vehicle and he believed that he was deceased. It was also reported that the man had been living inside his vehicle since December 2020.
There were no signs of injury or foul play noted by investigators at the scene. For information about the decedent’s identity, as well as cause and manner of death, please contact the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.”
The Bloomington Police Department and the Monroe County Coroner are investigating after a man was found deceased in a car parked at 15 S. Westplex Ave., Wednesday morning around 10:50 a.m. This is the second person found dead in the city in the past 24 hours.
Police were called around 10:50 a.m. after a person reported finding a man who appeared to be deceased. Officers arriving confirmed in scanner traffic that the person had died. A passerby told the Bloomingtonian the man had been living in the car and was unhoused. Others confirmed seeing the man in the area over the past few months.
The body of another man, who was unhoused, was found in an improvised shelter around 24 hours earlier at the property of the former Player’s Pub building on S. Walnut.
The Bloomingtonian is holding the description of the vehicle pending notification of next of kin, and more information from authorities about the death.
