8-year-old boy hospitalized for injuries after assault by 12-year-old at Meadows

A 12-year-old boy was arrested and charged with felonies after assaulting an 8-year-old boy at Bloomington Meadows Hospital Tuesday, according to Bloomington Police Department Capt. Ryan Pedigo.

An 8-year-old boy reported to staff at Meadows that he was verbally assaulted by a 12-year-old during a game of basketball at the facility, according to Pedigo. When staff went back to the court the 12-year-old had thrown the 8-year-old boy head first onto the ground.

According to the police report, it’s thought the boy who landed on his head lost consciousness, but the child regained consciousness in the nurse’s office when he began vomiting. The child was taken to IU Health Bloomington where an emergency surgery took place.

The 8-year-old was then transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for a brain bleed. Another surgery was performed at Riley and the boy was placed into an induced coma for a quicker recovery.

Police were notified of the incident the next day around 11 a.m., and an investigation into the assault began. Police made contact with the injured 8-year-old boy’s father, and have requested surveillance video from Meadows. The 12-year-old, from Ft. Wayne, was charged with a level 3 felony for aggravated bodily injury, and a level 5 felony for battery with a serious bodily injury.

He has been sent to juvenile detention at the Southwest Regional Youth Village in Vincennes, Indiana.

The Bloomingtonian doesn’t have any further updates on the condition of the 8-year-old boy.
