A house in the 4400 block of W. Tanglewood Drive just outside the city limits of Ellettsville was damaged by a fire Monday evening. The Ellettsville Fire Department covers that area of the county, which is part of Richland Township.
A neighbor told The Bloomingtonian her 4-year-old boy reported seeing the house across the street on fire, so she sent her 11-year-old boy to double-check, and he also said it was on fire. They called 911 and went to help. Soon neighbors from several homes scrambled to free a dog from the yard, and another from the house, but only learned later a cat was inside. The neighbor said the smoke was too thick to look inside for the cat.
“The cat was found later on in the incident and was brought out, but it did end up passing away after efforts by firefighters and EMS personnel to try and save it,” said Monroe Fire Protection District PIO Jason Allen.
Firefighters worked inside and outside the structure to extinguish the fire, and finally around 9:36 p.m. the fire was extinguished, according to scanner traffic.
“Monroe Fire District Station 25 and 29 responded as automatic mutual aid for Ellettsville in that area,” said Allen.
If more information becomes available this story will be updated.
CORRECTION: Van Buren Fire Department, despite the markings on the side of the truck, is now part of Monroe Fire District.
