Coroner confirms man drowned at Monroe Lake

Monroe County Coroner Joani Stalcup confirmed Wednesday to The Bloomingtonian that a 28-year-old man died by drowning Tuesday in the water of Monroe Lake at Fairfax Beach (the lake is called Lake Monroe by locals, but officially called Monroe Lake by the DNR).

Here is the full statement from Stalcup:

“I can confirm that a 28-year-old male from Plainfield, IN, Ambachew Nigatu, was recovered by divers from Monroe Lake yesterday evening at Fairfax Beach area, from an apparent drowning incident. An autopsy was completed this morning, 8/4/2021, in Terre Haute. Preliminary findings are consistent with drowning. Toxicology testing will be performed and results are pending.”
