Motorcyclist dies after fleeing during traffic stop Thursday night

A 27-year-old Delaware man with an active arrest warrant died Thursday night while fleeing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department during a pursuit on Ind. 45 Thursday night, according to a press release from the MCSO.

The Bloomingtonian heard police radio traffic at the beginning of the brief pursuit on Ind. 45 near Airport Rd. It sounded like the pursuit lasted less than a minute. Almost as soon as the pursuing deputy called out the speed of the fleeing motorcyclist, he said he would need a tow truck. The road was then shut down as an investigation into the crash began.

According to a press release sent to the media Friday:

“A 27-year-old Delaware man died last night just before 11:30. A MCSO Deputy
stopped the man, who was riding a Ninja motorcycle west on State Road 45 West, near
Airport road. After a brief stop, the motorcycle rider accelerated away from the deputy,” according to the MCSO.

“As the motorcycle rider fled west on State Road 45, he passed a westbound car on
a double yellow line. The driver of that car estimated the motorcycle rider’s speed to be
one hundred miles per hour. When the motorcycle rider maneuvered back into the
westbound lane, he collided into the rear of a westbound car.”

The release says the motorcyclist died at the scene.
