Man shot multiple times outside fast-food restaurant Tuesday in Bloomington

Bloomington Police Capt. Ryan Pedigo released the following statement to the media Tuesday evening:

“At approximately 5:30 p.m., multiple officers responded to the 3400 block of W 3rd Street in response to a 911 call of a person shot. At this point, investigators have been able to determine the following:

The 21-year-old male victim was in the drive-thru of Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in a vehicle. While the victim was seated in the vehicle, a single suspect approached the victim’s vehicle on foot. The victim and another man inside the vehicle then exited the vehicle through the front passenger door and the victim attempted to run southbound in the parking lot. The suspect followed and began shooting at the victim as he ran. The victim was struck multiple times. At some point during the altercation, the suspect reportedly dropped the handgun that he was shooting at the victim with, and the gun was then picked up by the other man that had been inside the vehicle with the victim in the drive-thru. That man then reportedly fired the handgun at the suspect as the suspect attempted to run from the scene. The suspect was not hit. The victim was then loaded into the car that he had originally been seated in while in the drive-thru of Freddy’s by the man that had picked up the gun and the man drove away from the scene with the victim while calling 911. The victim was taken to a residence on S Curry Pike and an ambulance from IU Health Ambulance Service responded to the address. The victim was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital by ambulance, where he was taken to emergency surgery. I do not have any further update on his condition at this time. The suspect that originally fired the handgun at the victim was located behind the strip mall in the 3400 block of W 3rd Street inside a dumpster and was taken into custody without further incident.

The investigation remains ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.”
