Firefighters discovered a fire had burned inside a library box Tuesday morning, according to Bloomington Police Department Capt. Ryan Pedigo.
Police were dispatched to the 1100 block of W. 12th Street around 7:03 a.m. after a report of a loud boom in the area, and a possible structure fire. Firefighters from the Bloomington Fire Department responded as well.
Upon arrival, firefighters were unable to locate smoke or fire and checked the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington building nearby but found no evidence of a fire.
However, a firefighter discovered a fire may have been purposely set inside the LittleFreeLibrary.Org library box along N. Monroe Street. A burnt book and a red t-shirt were still inside the box.
First responders did not find the location of the loud boom. The fire is being investigated by the BFD as arson.
The inside of the box is charred and the still had the smell of a recent fire Wednesday night.
There are no longer books inside. A sign on the box reads: Take a Book, Return a Book.
