Bloomington Police Arrest Murder Suspect

The Bloomington Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred inside a residence in the 900 block of W Graham Drive on February 8th. One victim died as a result of the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing, but one man has been arrested.

Gary W. O’Bryant, 56, of Bloomington, has been arrested and preliminarily charged with Murder.

On February 8th, 2022, an individual who wished to remain anonymous contacted the Bloomington Police Department at approximately 1:15 a.m. and advised an officer via telephone that they believed that a shooting had occurred at a residence in the 900 block of W Graham Drive. However, the caller could only provide vague information and refused to identify themselves or others believed to have been present when the shooting occurred. Officers checked the area and attempted to make contact at several residences in the 900 block of W Graham Drive, but were unable to locate anything suspicious.

A few hours later, investigators were able to speak with two individuals that claimed to have knowledge of the shooting. After speaking with the individuals and learning additional information, investigators petitioned the Court for a search warrant for a residence in the 900 block of W Graham Drive and the warrant was granted. During the service of the search warrant, investigators located a man at the residence who claimed to be napping on the couch. He was identified as Gary O’Bryant and was taken into custody as officers searched the home. Officers located evidence that indicated that someone had indeed been injured inside the residence, then located a deceased man inside a bedroom. The decedent had been wrapped in several blankets that were bound with rope.

O’Bryant was interviewed by investigators and then remanded to custody of the Monroe County Jail for the original charges of Dealing in Methamphetamine, level 2 felony; Maintaining a Common Nuisance, level 6 felony; and Failure to Report a Dead Body, A misdemeanor.

An autopsy was conducted on the man found dead inside the bedroom of the residence on February 9th and it was determined that the 29 year-old man died from a gunshot wound. The name of the victim is not being released at this time until next of kin can be properly notified.

Investigators continued to interview those with knowledge of the event and eventually developed probable cause to charge Gary O’Bryant with Murder, a felony.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information about the murder is asked to contact Detective Josh Burnworth at (812)339-4477.
