FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Panel discussion about how effective communication between the community and public schools can help benefit students
Indiana Coalition for Public Education–Monroe Co. presents its second event in the series “The Power of Public Education,” titled “Effective Communication Between Schools and Communities.” Effective, ongoing, two-way communication is at the heart of schools that help students succeed. Research suggests students do better when schools, parents/care providers, and the community are partners. A panel of professionals and parents with expertise and/or experience with effective communication to highlight important ideas and strategies for engaging in productive conversations to benefit students in our public schools. This event will be held on Monday, March 28th at 7 pm in the auditorium of the Monroe County Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.
“This event series will serve as a reminder about why we have, and still need, strong public schools in Indiana,” said Keri Miksza, chair of the Indiana Coalition for Public Education–Monroe County. “From concerns in the classroom to procedures dealing with school safety, communities have had multiple ways to communicate with schools for years. Often it’s too many choices, especially when social media is added to the mix. This event aims to help outline approaches to effective communication between public schools and their communities that benefit students.”
The panel includes:
- ● Michelle Cohen, parent of two children in the Monroe County Community School Corporation and active PTO member
- ● Maggie Polk-Olivio, music teacher and arts coordinator at Fairview Elementary School
- ● Brenda Whitaker, principal of Edgewood Primary School, Richland Bean Blossom Community Schools
- ● Markay L. Winston, assistant superintendent for curriculum & instruction for the Monroe County Community School Corporation Wendy Marencik and Peg Smith are board members of ICPE-Monroe County and will moderate the panel discussion. The next event in the series will also be held in the auditorium of the Monroe County Public Library. It is: The Power of Public Education, Part 3: School Funding and Your Tax Dollars May 9, 2022, 7:00 to 8:30pm For further information, please contact Keri Miksza at 303-746-8986.
