The following press release was sent to the Bloomingtonian Monday:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Charlie Bird of Bloomington’s Big 4-0 Birthday Celebration 4/2/22 – a fundraiser for his medical care

Charlie Bird, a green-winged macaw, is a local legend in Bloomington, known for riding on the back of a bicycle and dancing to live music at the farmers’ markets with his best friend, Jojo Porowski. This year marks Charlie Bird’s 40th birthday, which is celebrated on the first farmers’ market day of each spring.

Join us Saturday April 2nd 2022, 9am-12:30pm, at Woolery Farmers’ Market for live music from Kid Kazooey and Mitch Rice and a reading of the children’s book Charlie Bird Loves Bloomington. Visit our booth to shop for real Charlie feathers, stickers, books, and artwork – and to meet Charlie Bird in person! The author and illustrator of Charlie Bird Loves Bloomington, Sarah Milward and Winnie King, will be on hand to sign books. All proceeds benefit Charlie’s medical care.

In 2018, Charlie had a health crisis. He nearly died from an avian virus that affects his central nervous system. With treatment from an avian veterinary specialist, including antibiotic and antiviral injections, he survived and is expected to live a normal lifespan – 80 years or more! However, Charlie requires daily medication and regular visits to the specialist to keep him healthy. He’ll need medical care for his condition for the rest of his long life, with total costs estimated at over $25,000.
