Fire damages apartment complex Tuesday night on Leonard Springs Road

A fire at an apartment complex on South Leonard Springs Road damaged several apartments late Tuesday night. Firefighters were still at the scene early Wednesday.

Members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, EMS workers from IU Health, and others also responded to the scene. Leonard Springs road was shut down as fire hoses stretched from hydrants to fire trucks at the scene. A ladder truck from the Bloomington Fire Department also responded.

Residents were evacuated from the complex, and some stood outside the complex with pets. A resident told the Bloomingtonian a nearby apartment building had flooded several months ago, and residents struggled to find alternative housing during repairs. He said some slept in their vehicles in the parking lot during the winter. He wondered where some of the residents displaced by tonight’s fire would go. Bloomington has a tight housing market, and rents across the city have risen over the past couple years.
