The Indiana University Grad Workers Coalition responded on Twitter to the provost’s letter Tuesday, April 5, 2022:
There's a lot to say about @IUBProvost's statements at the University Faculty Council and his recently email to faculty.
— Indiana Grads (@IndianaGrads) April 5, 2022
Most importantly: We are, now more than ever, committed to unionizing. We are still prepared to go on strike. A 🧵 of other takeaways: 1/6
First, rather than encourage faculty dialogue — only allowing time for 2 comments — @IUBProvost spent most of the time recycling tired, false union-busting cliches — that we are primarily students who work <15 hours/week and receive >$50k/year in "value").

🥱 2/6
.@IUBProvost calls us a "small group of students". Is that how you would describe 1600+ workers (out of 2500) who've formally petitioned for a union? With a democratic infrastructure of 100+ union reps across nearly 40 departments?
— Indiana Grads (@IndianaGrads) April 5, 2022
…With 850+ of us prepared to strike? 3/6
The union isn't a 3rd party, we are the union. We asked for dialogue to begin a good-faith bargaining relationship, and are endorsed by @iubgpsg @iustudentgov. Unionization remains the only way for graduate workers' voices to be heard. 4/6

Shamefully, @IUBProvost has begun tokenizing & weaponizing undergrads.
— Indiana Grads (@IndianaGrads) April 5, 2022
Undergrads already suffer b/c admin insists on keeping us in poverty: our working conditions are our students' learning conditions.
To avoid the disruption of a strike: admin must recognize our union. 5/6
Graduate workers are crucial to IU's reputation as a cutting edge teaching & research institution. Rather than mar that reputation through threats and falsehoods, we urge IU and @IUBProvost to do the right thing.

We want a union.
Strike authorization vote begins April 10. 6/6
We are organizing in a right-to-work state against a hostile administration. We are humbled by the donations to our Strike Fund. If you are able, your donations will help us keep fighting to make history at Indiana University. https://t.co/mBSVK6ja8I
