Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition and supporters gathered Sunday at the Monroe County Public Library as a strike authorization vote began. Members of the IGWC-UE have until 3 p.m. Monday to vote for the strike. After the gathering at the MCPL some marched to the Switchyard brewery for a social gathering.
Indiana University refused to recognize the graduate workers union, and last week a letter from the provost threatened to fire the workers if they strike. Indiana is a right-to-work state, and Indiana University says it is under no obligation to recognize the union.
The employees at IU who teach while working on graduate degrees complain about low wages, and fees that then take back some of the employee compensation. For some students, the fees are a significant hardship.
