Surviving Bloomington: Combining Passions to Serve Others

Surviving Bloomington event held in June to raise funds for local homeless initiatives

[BLOOMINGTON, IN, April 2022–] For four days in June, 16 people will gather to play a game based off the reality television show “Survivor.” They’ll live together, compete in challenges, form alliances, solve riddles, and vote each other out until there is only one player left, the sole survivor of Surviving Bloomington!

More importantly, players will raise money to help support people experiencing homelessness in Bloomington prior to the game’s start. The contestants who raise the most money before the game starts will receive advantages to potentially help them progress through the game.

KC Winnecke, the founder of Surviving Bloomington, has been an avid fan of the show “Survivor” since he was a child. After moving to Bloomington in 2016 and volunteering at the Shalom Community Center, he became passionate about helping people experiencing homelessness. In 2018, he decided to combine his two passions and created Surviving Bloomington. Since its genesis, Surviving Bloomington has raised $14,800 for individuals in Bloomington experiencing homelessness.

The players for summer 2022 have been selected, but there are many ways to support and get involved with Surviving Bloomington. Individuals interested in volunteering to support this summer’s event can apply on the website at survivingbloomington.com. Donations can be made at https://bit.ly/3jt3A4T, which will help cover the cost of the event so more funds raised can go directly to community members impacted by homelessness. Additionally, KC is looking for donations of tarps, ropes, and ponchos, which can be dropped off at New Leaf, New Life (1010 S Walnut St Suite H) Monday through Friday between 10am-4pm. KC is also always looking for people who would allow the game to be played on private property. If you’re interested in hosting a future Surviving Bloomington event, you can contact KC at [email protected].
