On Wednesday, April 20, the Bloomington City Council passed a unanimous resolution in support of the Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition – United Electrical Workers (IGWC-UE) and the ongoing strike. Read the full text here.
The City Council has called on Indiana University administration to recognize IGWC-UE, and will be sending a copy of the passed resolution to President Pamela Whitten, Provost Rahul Shrivastav, Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs Eliza Pavalko, and the Board of Trustees.
As stated in the resolution, “Indiana University graduate student workers are essential members of the Bloomington community…and equitable grad worker pay is in the best interests of the city’s economic and social well-being.”
The resolution goes on to support the right of all workers to organize their collective power and to have a seat at the table in the decisions that are affecting them.
Graduate workers at IU are unionizing to ensure that undergraduate tuition dollars and alumni donations are making it back into the classroom, to uphold the world-class education that IU is known for.
