Indiana legislature bans abortion

Indiana governor Eric Holcomb signed a bill into law that will ban abortion in Indiana beginning September 15, 2022.

A special session of the Indiana legislature was convened after a conservative majority, including five conservative Catholic justices, struck down the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which gave women a constitutional right to abortion.

Last week a GOP supermajority in the Indiana Senate passed the bill to ban abortion. Indiana is the first since the supreme court decision in June. The bill then went back to the Indiana House of Representatives, which passed the bill Friday afternoon, sending it back to the Senate, to be passed after several hours of speeches.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb then signed the bill within minutes.

A group of abortion-rights activists reacted outside the Senate chambers after the passage of the law.

The new anti-abortion law provides exceptions when the mother’s life is at risk and for “fatal fetal anomalies.” And there are some exceptions for some abortions if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest.

An amendment to let Indiana voters decide by a vote whether or not to ban abortion on the 2022 general election ballot. Kansans voted against banning abortion a few days ago.

Indiana Senator Shelli Yoder, representing District 40 which encompasses Monroe County, spoke out before the ban:
