E-scooters stolen at Indiana University

Indiana University is reporting that several e-scooters and bicycles were stolen on campus. The University sent the following e-mail Tuesday:

IU Bloomington Crime Notice: 9/27/2022

In compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, a crime notice is being issued for reported motor vehicle thefts of e-scooters.

REPORTED OFFENSE: Within the past week, the IUPD has received three separate reports of thefts of e-scooters. Additionally, three bicycle thefts were reported during the same time frame.

TIME AND LOCATION OF OFFENSE: The first e-scooter theft occurred between September 17, 2022, and September 19, 2022, at the southwest bike rack of Cedar Hall. The next offense occurred between September 21, 2022, and September 22, 2022, at the north bike rack of Willkie. The final incident occurred on September 23, 2022, between 1:30 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. at the eastside concourse of Memorial Stadium. 

The first bicycle theft occurred on September 21, 2022, at the bike racks outside Lowell E Baier Hall. The second and third incidents both occurred on September 25, 2022. One theft occurred at the Wright Education building’s north side bike rack and the other at the Foster Gresham Hall bike rack.

SUSPECT:  Suspects are currently unknown, and investigation is ongoing.

SAFETY TIPS:  In an effort to keep yourself and others safe, please consider the following safety tips:

– When using a bike rack to secure a scooter or bicycle:
    – Lock your scooter or bicycle using at least one U-style lock around the frame, not the wheels.
    – Lock your scooter or bicycle in a well-lit area on a bicycle rack.
    – Report anyone suspicious hanging around bicycle racks to the police.
