Police arrest man who spent night hiding in Soma bathroom Tuesday in downtown Bloomington, Indiana

A worker arrived for their shift around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to soon discover someone was inside the restroom at Soma coffeehouse in the 300 block of East Kirkwood Avenue Tuesday, December 6, 2022, in Bloomington, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

The employee noticed a window was open but had seen that before, but when opening the business, noticed the smell of cigarette smoke emanating from the bathroom, which was locked. A light was on in the locked restroom. The worker called the police and waited outside for them to arrive.

Police entered the building, and found the door locked, so they knocked on the door and announced their presence. A 44-year-old man responded to the police, unlocked the door, and was placed under arrest for burglary.

As police were escorting the now handcuffed man to a police car, he made threats to the police. When an officer rolled down the police vehicle window to read him his rights, he spit on the officer’s face.

He is now facing preliminary charges of burglary, a level 5 felony; 3 counts of felony level 6 intimidation; and 1 count of level 6 felony battery.

The man’s address is listed by the police log as “transient.”
