Monroe County lawmakers to serve on key House committees

STATEHOUSE (Dec. 15, 2022) – Area lawmakers recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members’ two-year terms. State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman), elected to his first term in November, will serve as vice chair of the House Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications Committee, and as a member of the House Local Government Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee.

“I appreciate the opportunity to use my experience as an REMC director and county official when serving on these committees,” Hall said. “I hope to hear from Hoosiers from all walks of life on what we can do to keep our state moving forward.”

State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) will serve as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and as chair of the Higher Education Subcommittee. He will also serve on the House Financial Institutions Committee, and was reappointed as Majority Whip, a House Republican leadership position.

“Ensuring students who want to attend a college or university after high school have a viable path remains a priority,” Heaton said. “I look forward to discussions on how we can help more Hoosiers achieve their dream of a post-secondary education.”

State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) will serve as vice chair of the House Public Policy Committee, and as a member of the House Insurance Committee, and the House Ways and Means Committee. All will begin their work with the start of the 2023 legislative session.

“My experience working in the insurance industry is certainly helpful as we continue our work to lower out-of-control health care costs for Hoosiers,” Mayfield said. “With this being a budget-writing year, I also look forward to serving on House Ways and Means again as we craft another balanced budget that funds essential services, maintains prudent reserves and invests in the future.”
