Caveat Emptor Used Books bookstore may have a buyer … pending some paperwork, according to a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 11, 2023:
“Let us tell you about Schrodinger’s (assume an umlaut) bookstore…
We have been operating for about a year now in a state of both closing the store and trying to sell it. It has been very sad and very stressful. The intensity of emotions and work has ramped up considerably in the last six weeks.
There is no roller coaster on earth high enough or fast enough to make an analogy for what we’ve felt. We’ve always assumed a sad ending to this story, while hoping for a happy one. As January 31st (our lease-end date) loomed, we were certain the ending to Caveat’s tale was a sad one…
But the saga may continue! We have just received verbal confirmation of intent to buy the store. The buyers have secured the go-ahead for the lease and we are writing up the agreement today; we will hopefully have a buyer after all the legal mumbo-jumbo is taken care of. We will keep you posted! As always, as soon as we know, you’ll know.
This is by no means a done deal until it is signed on the dotted line. We actually didn’t want to announce anything until the deal was actually done, but this is so 11th-hour that we have to change our plans for the week regarding the liquidation sale.
So cross all your fingers and all your toes that this is actually happening. We believe it will happen as we’ve always believed in our bookstore, and what it represents to the culture and to the community.
For now, we are halting the planned liquidation, but you can still get books for $2 for hardback and $1 for paperback; we will be keeping regular hours this week. We decided to keep the sale prices through this weekend because we know some of you have planned your weekend around visiting one last time. Please keep those plans and come visit, we’d love to see you.
Be safe, happy, and healthy,
~ Caveat Emptor
Celebrating our 52nd year of bringing great books to great people.”
