Catalytic converter thieves target 6 vehicles while canvassing Bloomington, Indiana Thursday

Catalytic converter thieves stole the devices from 6 vehicles overnight on Thursday, February 2, 2023, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

A 78-year-old man told police his catalytic converter was stolen on February 2, 2023 in the 100 block of S. Smith Road. The theft was reported to have occurred around 1:34 a.m.

The thieves then stole a converter from a vehicle belonging to a 51-year-old man around 2:10 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Lincoln Street. A few minutes later at 2:18 a.m., a 30-year-old woman reported the catalytic converter was stolen from her vehicle in the 3100 block of East Covenanter Drive.

Later at 9:32 a.m. a man told police the catalytic converter was stolen from his vehicle in the 1100 block of South Clarizz Boulevard. Then in the 600 block of West 8th Street, at 3:36 p.m., a woman reported her catalytic converter stolen.

In the 800 block of South Park Avenue, a 21-year-old woman told police her catalytic converter was stolen, while her vehicle was parked outside.

Police did not specify what type of cars were targeted, or if any suspect(s) were caught. The Bloomingtonian will update this story.

Bloomington Police Department Captain Ryan Pedigo told the Bloomingtonian in 2022, thieves stole 88 catalytic converters within Bloomington City limits, and 5 more by January 10, 2023. Police statistics do not include parts of the city under county jurisdiction.
