Monroe County Sheriff’s Office employee fired after a violent encounter that left inmate injured

A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office employee was fired after hitting an inmate at the Monroe County Correctional Center in January, according to a video press release released on Facebook by Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Martè Thursday.

Martè said he would have the backs of his employees, but also hold them accountable, and that was why he terminated the employee. Martè said he made a vow to make accountability and transparency a top priority for the sheriff’s office.

The MCSO released a body cam video of the altercation, which left one employee injured and led to the inmate suffering a fractured nose, and orbital bone. As the inmate is later being restrained by several jail employees, he states over and over, “I can’t breathe.”
