Gallery: Memorial Day ceremony at Valhalla Cemetery
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA - MAY 29: Korean War Veteran Joe Maddox attends the Memorial Day ceremony at Valhalla Cemetery hosted by VFW Post 604 on May 29, 2023 in Bloomington, Indiana. Maddox served as a tank driver with the 6th Medium Battalion, 24th Infantry Division during a tour of duty in 1951 and 1952. He was credited with saving the life of a pilot who crashed in an F-80 Shooting Star jet fighter near Pyongyang. Maddox removed the pilot from the crashed aircraft as it burst into flames. The F-80 was the first American aircraft to exceed 500 miles per hour in level flight. In 1950 an F-80C shot down a Russian MiG-15 in the world’s first all jet fighter air battle.
