Alex Palou emerged triumphant at the Sonsio Grand Prix held at Road America on Sunday, showcasing claiming his third win in the last four races of the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES.
Driving the No. 10 the American Legion Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou solidified his lead by completing 55 laps with a total time of 01:50:04.6640. Leading for 10 laps, Palou maintained a consistent pace and secured the victory.
Reflecting on his victory, Palou shared his excitement about Road America, emphasizing his affinity for the track. “It’s my favorite road course on the calendar and probably in the States,” Palou said. “It’s been an amazing weekend. We had a lot of speed and our Honda was very good on fuel mileage, honestly. That gave us the win today. We were able to be consistent, fast, and we’re going to try and keep it rolling into Mid-Ohio.”
Josef Newgarden in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet finished second, trailing Palou by 4.5610 seconds, while Pato O’Ward driving the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet secured the third spot on the podium. O’Ward’s third-place finish marked his fourth podium appearance in eight races this season.
Palou’s win at the Sonsio Grand Prix further bolstered his position as a championship contender, as he now holds a lead of 74 points. This advantage positions Palou favorably as he aims to add another season title to his accolades, building on his 2021 championship win.
The victory at Road America marks Palou’s seventh career win, underscoring his skill behind the wheel. Over the past five weeks, Palou has demonstrated his mettle by securing wins in the GMR Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. Palou was the pole winner for the 2023 Indy 500.
The next race in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is scheduled for July 4th at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Palou as he continues his quest for championship glory, aiming to extend his lead and etch his name among the sport’s legendary drivers.
