Greensburg Man Killed Monday in Collision with Train

GREENSBURG, Ind.  — June 20, 2023

A Decatur County man died when his vehicle collided with a train Monday, June 19, 2023, just east of Greensburg, according to the Indiana State Police.

Troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings by the state police’s crash reconstructionists revealed that at approximately 12:30 pm, a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by 78-year-old Charles A. Papenhaus of Greensburg, Indiana, turned southbound onto County Road 200 East from State Road 46. As Papenhaus proceeded onto the road, the driver’s side of his vehicle was struck by a westbound Indiana and Ohio Railway Train crossing County Road 200 East.

Papenhaus suffered fatal injuries in the collision. The Decatur County Coroner’s Office pronounced him deceased at the scene. Neither of the two occupants aboard the train sustained any injuries.

The investigation into the crash is currently ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed further details at this time, according to ISP.

The family of the deceased driver has been notified.

Also responding to the scene of the collision were the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Greensburg Fire Department, Decatur County EMS, and the Decatur County Coroner’s Office.
