A 35-year-old man assaulted a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office jailer during an assault spree, according to MCSO PIO Jeffrey Brown. The assault left the jailer with a three-inch laceration requiring staples.
Around 11 a.m., the Bloomington Police Department began receiving calls about a man assaulting random people along the B-Line trail. The man worked his way north during the assault spree.
The alleged assaulter was screaming, and yelling, at people along the B-Line trail, during the busy morning, which featured Lemonade Day, the weekly Bloomington Farmers’ Market, and an art fair. He knocked people’s glasses off their faces, and damaged art.
Finally, the man, with an address in the 2400 block of Knightridge, in Bloomington, Indiana, encountered an MCSO jailer, and a bail bondsman in the alley between the Monroe County Jail, and the Curry Building. The jailer Sgt. Avery Brahaum, recognized the man, and said, “What’s up Chris?”
Unprovoked, the man proceeded to hit Brahaum in the back of the head with a Thermos, but while injured, Brahaum managed to subdue the attacker until help arrived.
The man who struck Brahaum, Christopher Head, is facing preliminary charges of assault on a public official, a level 5 felony.
The Monroe County arrest log lists additional charges:
Three counts of battery, an A misdemeanor; and theft a level 6 felony. Some of the charges are from the Bloomington Police Department.
This story will be updated when more information is available about other charges in the City of Bloomington. The jail is on Monroe County property.
Under Indiana law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
