West Baden Springs Hotel is Open, but Atrium closed due to hail damage

Sunday’s severe storms brought thunder, lightning, rain, tornados, and hail to Southern, Indiana, and the iconic West Baden Springs atrium, in French Lick, Indiana, was damaged when hail smashed through the glass ceiling of its dome. The damage left the floor covered in glass.

Shortly after the storm passed, the management of the French Lick Resort put out the following statement:

“Due to today’s hail storm, West Baden Springs Hotel sustained extensive hail damage.
The hotel remains open to guests. However, the atrium is closed indefinitely.
We are monitoring the situation closely and will keep you updated as we learn more.”

The famous site was a gathering place of the wealthy, the famous, and the infamous, including mobsters such as Al Capone in the early 20th Century. After sitting empty for decades, the site was remodeled by the Cook family and brought back into use several years ago.
