Person Shot While Driving on I-65 Southbound Near Southport Road

Indianapolis, IN – June 29, 2023

A man was shot shortly after 7:30 p.m. while driving his vehicle on I-65 southbound near Southport Road this evening, according to the Indiana State Police.

First responders responded to the scene, located near I-65 and Southport Road, and discovered an adult male with a serious gunshot injury. State Police Dispatchers to received a 911 call reporting the shooting.

Upon arrival, the Indianapolis Fire Department provided emergency medical aid to the victim, who was conscious and alert. The victim was transported by the Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Indiana State Police Detectives initiated an investigation into the incident and found that a road rage altercation unfolded on I-65 southbound near Southport Road, culminating in an unidentified individual in another vehicle pulling alongside the victim’s silver Honda and discharging multiple gunshots into it. One of the bullets struck the driver of the Honda. The suspect vehicle fled the scene.

The crime investigation remains active. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or was driving in the vicinity of I-65 near Southport Road around 7:30 p.m. on June 29th to come forward. In particular, individuals possessing dash camera footage are encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
