Staff report

Bloomington, Ind. – June 29, 2023

A thunderstorm descended on Bloomington Thursday afternoon, unleashing ominous clouds leaving a trail of fallen trees and widespread power outages.

The Monroe Fire Protection District (MFD) reported a surge in emergency calls, with at least 40 incidents involving downed power lines and trees. In response, the MFD took to social media: “Remember all power lines are considered dangerous until the power company deems them safe,” cautioned the MFD in a Facebook post.

Firefighters and other first responders were overheard in scanner traffic coordinating efforts at various locations where trees had toppled onto power lines while awaiting utility workers to disconnect power.

One first responder talked about a power line obstructing a road outside Bloomington, but was told there were no additional fire units to respond.

Within the city limits, a portion of a tree fell onto a parked car near the intersection of Dunn and 4th Street, but the vehicle didn’t appear to be damaged.
