Martinsville, Ind. — July 9, 2023
A house fire with entrapment claimed the life of a resident and a dog in Morgan County on Friday evening. The fire started around 9:28 p.m. in the 900 block of S. Home Ave., near Martinsville High School according to a report received by Morgan County Public Safety Dispatch.
Martinsville Police Department (MPD) units, already in the area, arrived at the scene within moments. MPD confirmed a report of entrapment and attempted to rescue the resident. However, as conditions rapidly deteriorated, their efforts to save the individual were unsuccessful.
Minutes later, firefighters from the Martinsville Fire Department (MFD) and the Washington Township Fire Department arrived. Firefighters entered the residence and brought the blaze under control within five minutes.
However, during a primary search of the structure, firefighters discovered the lifeless bodies of a resident and a canine. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation by MFD’s fire marshal in collaboration with investigators from the Indiana State Fire Marshal Office, Washington Township, Monroe Township, and the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department.
Assisting agencies at the scene included Green Township Fire Rescue, Morgan County EMS, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the Morgan County Coroner’s Office, and Morgan County Animal Control.
