A man who was a suspect in a shooting was found deceased after a member of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department discharged a patrol rifle at the suspect’s tent Wednesday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. Before firing the patrol rifle, and deputy, and an assisting deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office heard a gunshot.
The deputies were looking for the man because a 31-year-old woman was shot in the leg by her ex-boyfriend (the later deceased suspect) at her residence in Eagle Pointe, Monroe County, on July 18, 2023, between 9 and 9:30 pm, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. She had a no-contact order against the suspect.
After the shooting the MCSO was alerted by a caller at approximately 3:15 am on July 19, 2023, to report the incident.
According to the information from the investigation, at around 10:15 pm on July 18, the suspect, armed with a rifle and a handgun, drove the victim to a property on Old Clifty Road in Bloomfield, Greene County.
During their time there, the victim briefly lost consciousness but woke up around 1 am, then the suspect drove her back to her residence in Monroe County. Subsequently, at around 1:30 am, the victim sought help at her parents’ residence, prompting them to notify law enforcement.
The victim was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, and her injury is reported to be non-life threatening. The suspect had a pending case of domestic violence involving the same victim and a no-contact order was in place.
In response to the incident, detectives from the Sheriff’s Office requested deputies from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department to check the address on Old Clifty Road in an attempt to locate the suspect and secure the property while awaiting a search warrant. Additionally, a deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in Bloomfield to provide assistance to Greene County.
Upon reaching the property, deputies discovered the suspect’s vehicle with a tent set up next to it. While holding the perimeter, deputies witnessed the male suspect unzip and look out of the tent’s window. Identifying themselves as members of the Sheriff’s Office, the deputies were met with a gunshot from the tent moments later.
In response, a Greene County deputy discharged his patrol rifle toward the tent.
The incident led to the involvement of the Bloomington Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team, who were called in to respond to the address. Upon arrival, the Response Team found the suspect deceased inside the tent.
The Indiana State Police are currently investigating the officer-involved shooting. For any inquiries concerning the ongoing investigation, interested parties should direct their requests to the Indiana State Police.
