Severe Thunderstorms and Heat Advisory for Central Indiana

Staff report

Indianapolis, Ind. – July 28, 2023

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a hazardous weather outlook for central Indiana on Friday, July 28, 2023. Residents in multiple counties, including Monroe County, are advised to take precautions as severe weather conditions and extreme heat are expected.

Severe Thunderstorms: Late tonight, strong to severe thunderstorms are likely to sweep across the region. Damaging winds will be the primary concern, accompanied by the possibility of large hail, brief heavy rainfall, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Additional storms are also possible during this morning and afternoon, mainly affecting east central sections.

Heat Advisory: The heat advisory remains in effect as scorching temperatures continue to grip the area. Heat indices are expected to soar near 110 degrees this afternoon, creating hazardous conditions. Residents are urged to review heat safety information available at weather.gov/safety/heat and to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Spotter Information: Spotter activation is possible late tonight to assist in monitoring the severe thunderstorms.

Air Quality Alert: Furthermore, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has declared an Air Quality Action Day for Ozone from midnight tonight until midnight EDT Friday night. Ozone levels are predicted to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Active individuals, especially children and adults with respiratory conditions such as asthma, are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure.

To help reduce ozone-forming emissions, the public is encouraged to adopt the following practices:

  • Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation instead of driving alone.
  • Combine errands into one trip to minimize vehicle use.
  • Avoid refueling vehicles or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until after 7 pm.
  • Turn off engines when idling for more than 30 seconds.
  • Conserve energy by turning off lights and setting air conditioners to 75 degrees or higher.
