FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, IN – August 1, 2023

Indiana’s premier hackerspace, Bloominglabs, is excited to announce the return of Makevention, the annual DIY and maker convention celebrating its tenth year. This eagerly awaited community event is set to occur on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 10 AM to 4 PM at a brand new location for the event – Bloomington’s Switchyard Park Pavilion.

Makevention has become a cornerstone of Bloomington’s dynamic maker community. The event embodies the spirit of creativity, innovation, and collaboration, providing a platform for artisans, crafters, engineers, and inventors from across the Midwest to exhibit their unique DIY projects.

“We look forward to hosting Makevention this year at Switchyard Park celebrating the wealth of talent and innovation within our community,” stated Jeannette Lehr, Makevention Lead Organizer. “This event offers an incredible opportunity for all age groups to experience hands-on learning, engage in constructive dialogue, and interact with local artisans and makers.”

This year’s Makevention is sponsored by Cook Medical, the City of Bloomington’s Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, Wonderlab, Dimension Mill, Tom Cherry Muffler, IU’s Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, and IU’s Center of Excellence for Women & Technology. The event will showcase a wide range of exhibits including interactive displays, maker demos, and wares for sale spanning various disciplines such as robotics, blacksmithing, electronics, woodworking, ceramics, and 3D printing. Dedicated activities for children will also be included in the event, replete with hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and foster a love for making.

Makevention is a great way for community organizations, clubs, schools, Indiana University, and local businesses to collaborate with a growing community of excited, motivated, and creative people. This event  is a visible point of outreach that regularly draws exhibitors and attendees from outside Monroe County, including Goshen, Terre Haute, Louisville, and Indianapolis.

While admission is free of charge, donations to support the event and Bloominglabs’ continuous community outreach are warmly welcomed. A suggested donation of $5 will be welcomed at the door where participants can grab a bingo card or child’s activity board to make the event even more interactive.

“We invite everyone, regardless of their skill level, to join us at Makevention,” added Lehr. “Spend the day discovering, learning, and drawing inspiration from the incredible work of our maker community.”
