Bloomington, Ind. — August 20, 2023
In anticipation of the upcoming hot temperatures and a Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service, Cooling Stations are set to open their doors in Monroe County this week. The centers are being provided to offer respite and relief for residents seeking refuge from the sweltering conditions.
From August 20th to August 25th, the Cooling Stations will be operational daily between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
However, the Monroe Fire Protection District Station 22, located at 3953 S. Kennedy Drive, will not be able to function as a Cooling Station during this period due to ongoing construction.
Officials are urging individuals, particularly those who may be vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, to take advantage of the available Cooling Stations. The centers offer air-conditioned environments, where individuals can find relief, stay hydrated, and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The National Weather Service has recommended that residents take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. This includes staying hydrated, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and regularly checking on vulnerable individuals.
