Monroe County firefighter who died in line of duty in 1988 to be honored Thursday in Indianapolis, Indiana

Bloomington, Indiana – September 5, 2023

Local firefighter Jan Dawes, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty 35 years ago, will be honored during a ceremony Thursday at the Fallen Police and Firefighter Memorial, located at Government Way & Senate Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

Jan Dawes, a dedicated firefighter, lost his life to a medical emergency on the morning of August 8th, 1988, while stationed at Van Buren Township Fire Station 9. His name will finally find its place on the pillars of the Fallen Police and Firefighter Memorial, as firefighters, family members, and the community come together to remember his service and honor his memory.

This tribute to Dawes has been made possible through the efforts of the Monroe Fire Protection District, in collaboration with the Professional Firefighter Union of Indiana, led by President Tony Murry, and IVFA Lobbyist Larry Curl, among others.

Indiana Law Enforcement and Fire Fighters Memorial is located at Government Way and Senate Avenue in Indianapolis, IN 46204.

The ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m.
