Interdisciplinary Collaboration “ASH” Celebrates American Ash Tree at FAR Center for Contemporary Arts

Renowned dancer and choreographer Kate Vermillion Lyons is set to bring an innovative performance titled “ASH” to the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts in Bloomington, Indiana, on October 19th and 20th, 2023.

The event, a dance, sculpture, and music collaboration, aims to investigate and celebrate the diminishing presence of the American Ash Tree through an interdisciplinary performance. “ASH” promises to deliver a unique experience featuring a solo dancer, an original musical score, illuminated sculptures, and several ash wood elements that will continuously transform the set-scape. Audience engagement is actively encouraged, allowing spectators to change their viewing location throughout the performance.

Kate Vermillion Lyons, a Bloomington native, and an alumna of the IU Contemporary Dance Program, brings a wealth of experience to this performance. Her professional journey, which began in Boulder, Colorado, has included performances and teaching with esteemed groups such as 3rd Law Dance/Theatre, Nosilla Dance Project, and Industrial Dance Alliance.

Currently, Kate Vermillion Lyons serves as an Adjunct Faculty member for IU Contemporary Dance, instructing students and directing rehearsals for guest choreographers like La Meira Goldberg and DaEun Jung. Additionally, she serves as the Dance BFA Recruitment Liaison. Kate is also a company member of Elizabeth Shea Dance, with notable performances including “Rhythm Runs Through It” at RADFest 2023 and participation in White Wave’s Solo/Duo Festival in 2022, as well as “Ascension” at the Eskenazi Museum of Art in November 2019.

Apart from her work with IU dance majors, Kate extends her teaching to the community by offering improvisation classes at various studios in Bloomington.
