Update: Monroe County Coroner Joani Stalcup sent the following information Sunday evening:
“The Monroe County Coroner Office responded to the 5900 block of E. State Road 45 on 11/4/2023 at approximately 0450am. The deceased was identified as Tara Langley, 48, of Bloomington. Ms. Langley had an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased on the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled in Terre Haute for Monday, 11/6/2023. The Coroner’s office is investigating this death along with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Cause and manner of death will be confirmed through autopsy and released once the autopsy has been completed.”

Bloomington, Indiana – November 5, 2023
Bloomington, Indiana – On November 4, 2023, at approximately 01:30 A.M., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence located at 5929 E SR 45 following reports of an unknown disturbance. Deputies arrived on the scene to discover a deceased person inside a structure, which has since evolved into a murder investigation.
A male suspect has been identified as Bryce Leighton, 34, a resident of Bloomington. Additionally, neighbors in the area reported ongoing disputes involving the occupants of the residence at 5929 E SR 45.
Deputies conducted a check of the premises and made a discovery – a deceased individual with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Near the body, law enforcement recovered an AR-15-style rifle, as well as a civilian-style stun gun/taser.
In connection with the incident, Leighton was taken into custody and subsequently transported to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation. Following the initial inquiry, he was remanded into custody at the Monroe County Correctional Center, facing charges of Murder.
The case is currently being investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division, with additional support from the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
