Bloomington, Indiana – November 12, 2023
In response to a reported attempted sexual assault on November 10, 2023, at 5:34 p.m., Indiana University Police apprehended a suspect in Dunn Woods, located south of the Student Building on the IU Bloomington campus, according to the IUPD.
Bystanders in close proximity to the incident intervened prompting a response from law enforcement. The suspect, confirmed to have no affiliation with the university, was detained at the intersection of 4th Street and Lincoln Street.
Case No. 234812 outlines the charges brought against the suspect, including attempted rape (level 3 felony), sexual battery (level 6 felony), battery with injury (A misdemeanor), confinement (A misdemeanor), and criminal trespass (A misdemeanor). Following the arrest, the suspect was transported to the Monroe County Jail.
In a press release the Indiana Police Department stated, “The IU Police Department commends the quick action of the bystanders that stepped in when they saw a harmful situation and for swiftly contacting law enforcement. IU is dedicated to preventing and responding to all forms of sexual violence.”
