Baseball enthusiasts and cinema lovers are set to witness the premiere of a groundbreaking documentary, THUNDER ROLLS! The World of Blind Baseball, chronicling the incredible journey of the Indianapolis Beep Baseball team, the Indy Thunder. Directed by Robert Arnove and Susanne Schwibs, this free and non-ticketed event aims to shine a spotlight on the world of visually impaired athletes in competitive sports.

The film, scheduled to screen on Sunday, December 3, at 1:30 pm in the Waldron Arts Auditorium at 122 S. Walnut Street, explores the captivating narrative of the Indy Thunder’s pursuit of a World Championship. Notably, both filmmakers will be in attendance for a Q&A session following the screening, providing audiences with a deeper insight into the film’s creation.

“How can individuals who are blind and visually impaired play baseball?” asks the documentary. THUNDER ROLLS! intricately weaves together a thrilling sports story with an educational message, unveiling the innovative ways these athletes engage in baseball. Through altered game rules, adapted technologies, and newfound opportunities, the film showcases how individuals with disabilities can excel in competitive sports, reaching Olympic-level prowess.

Narrated by Jesse Eisenberg and featuring an original music score by Tyron Cooper, THUNDER ROLLS! presents a spirited and humanistic portrayal of the Indy Thunder team. It delves into their journey toward victory while illustrating the familial bonds that bind them together under the guidance of their coach, Darnell Booker.

“This is more than a sports story; it’s about breaking barriers and showcasing the diverse accomplishments of these remarkable individuals,” Arnove commented. “It operates on multiple levels of entertainment and social significance, highlighting the triumph of human spirit and determination.”

Arnove, a Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of Education at Indiana University, Bloomington, is a renowned scholar in comparative education. His co-edited textbooks and latest book, “Talent Abounds,” delve into mentoring and coaching in the arts and athletics. Schwibs, an award-winning filmmaker and educator, has produced documentaries with nationwide distribution, and together with Arnove, previously collaborated on “Así Fue: Election Time Nicaragua, 1984.”
