Bloomington, Indiana – November 26, 2023

After the Indiana University Athletics Department’s decision to fire head football coach Tom Allen, a group of undisclosed donors has stepped forward to foot the bill for Allen’s departure, worth a historic multimillion-dollar sum.

Announced Sunday by Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson, the departure of Coach Allen marks the end of his seven-year tenure. Dolson, in a prepared statement posted on the Athletics website, stated that a national search for Allen’s replacement would commence immediately.

“After continued evaluation of our entire football program, I have determined that we have lost momentum and that a change in leadership is necessary at this time,” Dolson remarked. “I want to thank Tom for all of the contributions he has made to IU. His passion, character, and class made a positive impact on our student-athletes. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

While the university has chosen not to disclose the identities of the benefactors, Dolson confirmed that a financial settlement had been reached between the institution and Allen. The agreement includes two $7.75 million installments, to be sourced from the Department of Athletics donor funds.

“As of Nov 23, the average annual salary in Indiana is $48,559. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $23.35 an hour. This is equivalent to $933 a week or $4,046 a month. Most salaries in Indiana range between $34,388 (25th percentile) to $59,374 (75th percentile) annually, according to Zip Recruiter.

Just doing some math, the salary of 7.75 million dollars per year would work out to be $3,721.15 per hour based on a 40-hour work week for the next year.

Meanwhile, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Workers in the Bloomington, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area had an average (mean) hourly wage of $26.69 in May 2022, 10 percent below the nationwide average of $29.76.”

The decision to keep the identities of the donors confidential has sparked curiosity and speculation among followers of the Hoosiers football program. Had the university revealed the donors’ names, it’s likely that an influx of inquiries for financial support would have ensued.

However, considering Texas A&M just fired their football coach, and it will cost them 78 million, maybe IU doesn’t pay so well.
