Remains of person found inside burned vehicle after collision near Bloomington, Indiana

Bloomington, Indiana – November 26, 2023

Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal vehicle collision on November 18, 2023, at approximately 12:50 PM, in the 4000 block of Hartstrait Road near Bloomington, Indiana, according to a press release from the MCSO.

Initial information received by Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch indicated that the vehicle involved was fully engulfed in flames upon deputies’ arrival, with the sole occupant still inside, according to statements from bystanders.

Emergency response units from the Monroe Fire Protection District and the Ellettesville Fire Department arrived at the scene to address the blaze. Once the fire was extinguished, the remains of a single individual were discovered within the vehicle.

At present, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is collaborating with the Monroe County Coroner’s Office to verify the identity of the deceased. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to establish the cause behind this tragic accident.
