Bloomington Police Investigate Murder

On December 3rd, 2023, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers with the Bloomington Police Department responded to the 500 Block of S. Park Ave. in reference to a weapons related call. Upon arrival, officers located multiple people in the area that were exiting a large house party. Bystanders advised officers that someone had been shot. Officers searched the area and located the victim, a 23 year-old Bloomington man, who had a gunshot wound to his chest. Officers immediately began life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful and the victim died from his injuries. Officers also located another 19 year-old Bloomington man with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Witnesses at the scene told investigators that a larger-build white male wearing a pink shirt with facial hair produced a handgun and began firing the weapon into a crowd at the party. This information was disseminated to all officers and a Trooper with the Indiana State Police performed a traffic stop on a vehicle shortly thereafter with a passenger that matched the description of the shooter. The man matching the suspect description was identified as Isaiah Ramos (21, Linton). A handgun was located inside the vehicle and all three occupants were detained and transported to the Bloomington Police Department for interviews.

Detectives responded to the scene of the shooting and interviewed multiple witnesses. It was learned that Ramos and the other two passengers in the vehicle were denied entry into the party because one of the individuals had a visible handgun in their waistband. The three men demanded entry into the party and a physical altercation ensued which made its way into a nearby alley. At that time, witnesses stated that they observed Ramos, who was wearing a pink sweater, begin firing a handgun into the crowd.

One of the men that was a passenger in the vehicle stopped by ISP advised investigators that he believed he had been shot, but he did not have any injuries. At the conclusion of the interviews, Isaiah Joseph Deleson Ramos (DOB 7/25/2002) was transported to the Monroe County Jail and remanded on the following preliminary charges:

Murder, a Felony
Criminal Recklessness, Level 5 Felony

This investigation remains active and no further information is available for release at this time. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Rob Shrake at (812)339-4477.

Staff report

Bloomington, Indiana – December 3, 2023

Chaos erupted in Bloomington early Sunday morning as gunfire erupted in the vicinity of East Hunter Avenue, leaving at two individuals wounded and prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

According to preliminary information obtained from police radio dispatches, the situation unfolded around 2 a.m. with reports of shots fired in the 500 block of Park. At 700 East Hunter, a subject sustained a gunshot wound to the lower back, prompting an ambulance dispatch at approximately 2:02 a.m. Law enforcement indicated that the victim might be deceased.

In the aftermath, a second individual, said he suffered from a gunshot wound resulting from a bullet ricochet, and was discovered in a vehicle near Indiana and 7th Street. The alleged victim, a passenger in the vehicle, had no injuries that authorities could locate, according to police.

Meanwhile, a second actual gunshot victim was found in an alleyway west of the house at 2:04 a.m. Emergency services dispatched a second ambulance to attend to this victim, a 19-year-old male with non life threatening injuries, according to police.

As dawn broke, the scene remained active as police investigators combed the area for evidence. A witness reported hearing a series of rapid gunshots, described as a single burst of “pop, pop, pop” repeated approximately eight times.

Law enforcement described a possible suspect, initially described as a white male approximately 6 feet tall wearing a pink sweatshirt. A subsequent sighting by the Indiana State Police matched the initial description.

The situation grew more complex as IU Health reportedly ran out of ambulances, necessitating the dispatch of one from Greene County for assistance. Additionally, three men in a vehicle were taken in for questioning after one was found in possession of a loaded firearm.

It isn’t unusual in Monroe County for ambulances to be requested d as mutual aid from surrounding counties then put on standby, and sometimes Monroe County ambulances are put on standby for other counties in the same manner.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office didn’t its daily arrest log, adding further opacity to the unfolding events and leaving the public and media without crucial information regarding potential arrests related to the incident. The Bloomingtonian reached out to the MCSO to request the log.

Details regarding the recovered firearm, identified as a SIG Sauer P365, and the ongoing questioning of individuals involved, remain central to the ongoing investigation.

Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
